Dateline: June 9, 2013, Berry, Alabama- "Sunday Silent Auction 2013"

It's time for another...

DID YOU KNOW?

In honor of my hometown post...  Did you know that you can rinse raw bacon under cold water before you fry it, thus reducing shrinkage while frying?  Now you do.

Also, for those who might be interested in the University of North Alabama's new Public History program, please visit the following link:  http://www.una.edu/history/public-history/index.html.  And, yes, yours truly is on there, under "Students"...  Just sayin'.

I would like to share a couple of photographs from the "Sunday Silent Auction 2013" held to raise funds for my hometown's new Resource Center.  "The Friends of the Berry Library" sponsored the auction, while the "Berry Women's Club" donated wonderful refreshments.  Thank you ladies and the office of Mayor (commonly called Your Honor by yours truly) Jimmy Madison!  The flower arrangements were provided, designed, and constructed by my mother, Mary Lollar, who offers a certificate in "Floral Design" at the University of North Alabama.

My talented wife, Mandy, designs and constructs handmade jewelry.  This is her "Spirit of Berry" necklace.

See the black ball near the center of the table?  I donated three items from my personal archaeological collection and this is a "Battle of Chaplin Hills" (Civil War; 10/8/1862) cannon-ball.

"War Eagle!" indeed.

We are equal opportunity exhibitionists.  Um, maybe that's not the right choice of words?

Well, will you looky here!  It's City Council Member Clyde Pendley.

You can't cook butter without some Paula Deen cookware y'all!

A polished nugget necklace of turquoise, again by Mandy.

A donated painting by resident artist Paul Yerby.  Mr. Yerby's work is truly amazing, one of the prime examples hanging in the Berry City Hall.  It is a portrait of President Lincoln that is of Smithsonian quality.

Artist Virgil Beavers also donated a lovely painting, highlighting inherent talent with the fact that he has only been painting a small number of years, and yet produces such vibrant work!  The podium, well, that's where yours truly was MC.

As of this posting, the amount of money raised by this event- in sales and donations- is right at $1,700.  The next order of business on the agenda for "The Friends of the Berry Library" is the addition of bookcases to the Resource Center site.  Here is a look inside the building, it's just clean and full of books now...

The bricks used to construct this building came from the burned-down "Alabama Christian College" that was located in the town of Berry.  Talk about epic re-purposing!

Remember, if you wish to donate books and/or funds, please e-mail boloponch@centurytel.net or me at writeit101@gmail.com and we'll point you in the right direction.  Thank you for visiting!

  1. Excellent work - glad the database helped quench some of your World History thirst. It would be interesting to compare this site with one that is "closed" to see what different types of resources each type of databases contain. Do closed databases have "better" resources than open databases? Just a thought!
